See what the future holds: three minutes to better milk

AAD is developing an on-farm, rapid mastitis diagnostic test for introduction in 2010 based on the technology leading researchers are using today. Put a drop of milk from each quarter into one of the four wells on a disposable plate, insert it in the sturdy barn-ready Reader, and in three minutes or less, it will detect even subclinical mastitis from regular milk or colostrum.

This SCC+™ System offers dairies the following benefits:

  • Allows for earlier detection of the infected quarter (individual milk gland) at the subclinical stage in an economical, cow-side test that delivers results in three minutes or less,
  • Offers high accuracy of 95% versus 70% or less for currently used tests,
  • Works on all milk -- even on colostrum so infected cows can be diagnosed immediately post-partum when treatment is more practical and least costly,
  • Cuts treatment costs by enabling selective dry cow therapy instead of universal antibiotic treatment because it reliably detects the mastitic quarter, and
  • Provides objective results, making it easier for low-skilled workers to accurately diagnose cows needing treatment.

The system is suitable for use in farm environments; it’s inexpensive, portable, fast and easy to use with minimal operator training, unlike centralized laboratory equipment. Numerous clinical trials have validated the system’s competitive advantages and the unique benefits of the rapid diagnostic information it provides to help better manage dairies.
